Why Standard Lifting Frames Fall Short in Extreme Heat
Lifting a heavy mould is one thing. Lifting it safely while it’s exposed to extreme heat is another entirely. When temperatures reach 300 degrees Celsius, standard steel design rules start to change, and that’s where precision engineering becomes absolutely critical. This is the realm where custom lifting frames separate reliable operations from potential disaster.
Most lifting frames are designed under standard ambient temperature assumptions. Engineers calculate load capacities, stress distributions, and safety factors based on steel performing at its optimal strength. But what happens when that same steel is subjected to elevated temperatures?
The answer is significant: steel loses strength. As temperatures rise, yield strength decreases, modulus of elasticity diminishes, and structural integrity becomes compromised. The safety margin built into a standard lifting frame begin to erode rapidly. What was once a robust lifting solution can quickly become a liability when heat enters the equation.
When Smartstream Technology approached Yenem Engineering to engineer a rotomould frame structure, the team faced exactly this challenge. The frame needed to support two 250kg moulds while exposed to temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius. A standard off-the-shelf lifting frame simply could not be trusted under these conditions.
Engineering a Lifting Frame for Heat-Affected Conditions
Yenem’s engineering team developed bespoke lifting frames specifically designed to account for reduced material performance under thermal stress. The design process accounted for several critical factors that standard lifting frames would overlook.
First, a 30% strength reduction was applied to all weld calculations due to high heat exposure. This conservative approach ensured that connection points throughout the lifting frames would maintain integrity even as temperatures climbed.
Second, the team recognised that all steel components would experience similar thermal expansion simultaneously. This uniform expansion was factored into the design to prevent differential stresses that could compromise the lifting frames during operation.
The engineering calculations applied a lifting load factor of 2.025, combining standard safety requirements with additional margins for the extreme operating environment. With a total lifting mass of 665kg including the frame and both moulds, every component of the lifting frames was analysed for performance under these demanding conditions.
Precision and Safety: Lifting Frames That Lift and Rotate
The lifting frames designed for this application weren’t just required to lift heavy moulds. They needed to lift, rotate at speeds up to 6 rpm, and maintain full structural integrity throughout the entire process. This added complexity demanded even more rigorous engineering.
The frame system incorporated a bottom frame connected to a rotating shaft and a top frame supporting the moulds. High temperature fasteners including ASTM A193 Grade B7 bolts, ASTM A194 Grade 2H nuts, wedge-locking washers, and high-temperature nickel anti-seize were specified to ensure reliable connections under thermal stress.
Deflection criteria of span/250 were applied to both lifting and operational conditions, ensuring the lifting frames would maintain dimensional stability throughout their service life.
Yenem: Specialists in Non-Standard Lifting Frames
Not every lifting challenge fits neatly into standard categories. Environmental factors like extreme heat introduce risks that conventional lifting frames aren’t designed to address. This is where Yenem’s expertise becomes invaluable.
With deep experience in engineering lifting frames, beams, and lugs for demanding applications, Yenem specialises in scenarios where standard solutions fall short. The team understands that when conditions push materials to their limits, every detail matters, from material selection to weld specifications to fastener grades.
