Tropicana Gold Mine – Head Chute Structural Wear

A beam supporting a bin feed conveyor head end and chute had significantly worn (poor design with no thought as to the long-term performance of the structure!)

Our Smart Solution

Our brief was to design a replacement beam and a method for the rapid removal and install during a planned shutdown.

When we studied the structural system looking for smart ways to solve the problem we determined that we could add some steelwork to the space above the bin roof and make a truss using existing steelwork. The worn beam was no longer required and could remain in the chute with no fear of structural damage as it slowly disappears!

The dust covers were altered to accommodate the additional bracing, and a shutdown became unnecessary.
